Days 4 and 5

As the week drew on the human’s fate look less and less certain. Their numbers had been dropping steadily by the day and their expeditions out of safety were frequently ending in heavy casualties. In response they slowed their participation in such activities – this has unfortunately left them in a position where they might not have completed enough objectives to have a chance of escape. Their window of opportunity is quickly disappearing – but they still have some hope.

The fourth day started with a plea of help from Moriartium. Yesterday the humans had sabotaged her experiments – only to later find out that this was all part of Kaplan’s plans to delay their escape so he could make money. Moriartium asked the humans to set up an observation station so she could observe zombie behaviour – but sadly for her no humans came to help. She was forced to set it up herself and has not forgiven the humans for this since. Kaplan got a whiff of Moriartium’s plans however and set out to disrupt them. This time he enlisted the help of the zombies – getting them to act erratically, meaning Moriartium couldn’t get proper behavioural data. The zombies were very successful in this task, to the point where Moriartium was considering abandoning her research all together.

Meanwhile a squad vs squad territorial dispute was raging across campus. Throughout the day squads competed against each other and the zombies for control of special territories. Global Warming and Paranoia in Pajenka’s each captured one territory – but the zombies denied the humans the other two.

By nightfall Moriartium decided to give the humans one last chance to prove themselves. She asked the humans to help guide in a shipment of her equipment which was essential for her research. The humans were required to solve a puzzle of where the colourful beacons should go to help the pilot navigate a successful landing. This puzzle proved to be incredibly challenging for the humans due to a very small turnout of supporters and although the shipment made it in the end, Moriartium was not at all pleased.

The next day all seemed quiet. Little was heard of Kaplan, Moriartium or the long distant Voodoo Queen. They each seem to be planning something – what no one knows. From the borders of the campus the high walls look all the more threatening and strange noises can be heard coming across them – but what they are no one knows. Communication with the outside world is still sketchy at best and little is known about what is happening out there.

Today the humans and zombies had a little bit of R&R in the gym, a full safe zone. A bunch of mini-games were run. The first was called sharpshooter and involved each human having to survive progressively larger rounds of zombie attacks while standing in a small circle with only 6 shots of ammo. After enough people had a go a final game was run with two humans and double the zombies. Next up a giant 9 way squad war was held where each squad got all its members (zombies and humans alike) armed them up and had a massive death match. Following on from this two events were run simultaneously. The first was a best of three knockout tournament between the squads (and a no-squad team). The tournament competition was fierce, but in the end the final came down to  Global Warming vs Paranoia in Pajenkas. The first round of the final was close with a slim win to PiP, but the second was a firm victory – leaving the undefeated champions as PiP. The other game involved humans running between lines trying to stay alive. A final round of this game was run where the humans put their lives on the line for escapium. Two humans died in the process, but the human team achieved 4 escapium in total.

The rest of the day went silently until the night. Zombies and humans alike were disturbed from their sleep and unsleep respectively by the sound of engine jets. Military plane streaked across campus and a rain of bombs followed them. Soon the campus was alight the hundreds of explosions and fires which had burst out of the darkness. The casualties were innumerable – but it was clear that this was a preliminary sweep – there would be more, it was just a matter of time. As part of the bombing all of the bridges on campus save union bridge were destroyed entirely – making them impassable.

Both humans and zombies face an uncertain future. The Postman has warned them of a final purging of the area and its only a matter of time. Something has to happen if either side wishes to survive, their only hope lies in alliance with the dominant characters so far. Who will they choose to side with and how will they escape this apocalypse? Or will they simply all burn alive in the fires of progress.

Days 2 and 3

The past couple of days have been long and hard ones for the survivors inside the quarantine zone at ANU. As of yet they are still completely isolated from the outside world and have been forced to deal with all the issues and problems they have been facing on their own. The humans and zombies are fighting over the appraisal and help of powerful neutral figures in their community – but will this really help their cause, or are they just furthering personal agendas?

Tuesday began with a much larger zombie hoard than the night before, apparently the humans had been far too relaxed about  destroying the pills and drinks and a bunch of new zombies had formed from those humans who just couldn’t take it anymore. This increased number of zombies made life much harder for the humans and soon their numbers started falling as swarms of zombies picked them off, one by one.

During the light hours of their second day in quarantine the humans attempted to solve riddles at the request of the Voodoo Queen, Madame Mystique. She requested items which were hidden at the end of these riddles which would help her in a ritual she was preparing. The humans were slow to gather the items and the Voodoo Queen quickly became annoyed at them, but they managed to find them all before time ran out, including the ritual book she needed.

That night the voodoo queen met with the humans and asked them to move in five groups to different sections of the university. The pattern of their formation helped channel her energies and when they all came together in chiefly meadows she was finally ready for her great ritual. However misfortune struck the humans as the zombies focussed in on one of their groups – managing to break their lines and kill the majority of them. Nonetheless the humans completed the mission successfully in the end.

The next request however was a surprise. Mystique requested a single human “sacrifice” to be made as part of her ritual. This lone champion would have to fight off the hoard of zombies to survive – embodying pure heroism. Part of this however was that the humans had to move away – enjoying temporary immunity while her ritual was conducted. Little did they know that she was actually experimenting on things far more sinister. The human sacrifice died as expected – but instead of coming back as a zombie – remained a human. But this was no cure, he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing – controlled by the voodoo queen. This test subject proved to her that she could in fact control zombies…

After a night of fitful sleeping the humans were yet again thrown into the battlefield that has become their life over the last few days. It has been only 3 days since the first outbreak of this… condition… yet it feels like years have passed. Its amazing how fast continuous stress can age the body and the mind. However they were to receive no rest as they go a message from a new individual.

To their surprise this individual was Kaplan Thornhill himself. Why he is here or even how he got in here is a mystery, but he seems intent on staying. His first request was to be led to the shop, to meet the shop keeper. A group of humans attempted to escort him to gain his favour – but their lines broke and many of them started to fall to the larger zombie group. The survivors of these attacks decided to flee rather than wait for their inevitable deaths. As a result Kaplan was escorted the rest of the way by zombies – giving Kaplan not a particularly good view of the humans. The zombies were surprised to see quite a spectacle when they got to the shop though. Kaplan, rather than meeting with the shopkeeper, simply shot him. He has now taken over the store and introduced a series of new items for sale…

Following this he gave the humans another chance to redeem themselves. He gave them the locations of 3 “EMP” bombs. These EMPs were to be used that night, though for what reason the humans didn’t know. Kaplan later revealed that they were in fact to be used to attack the scientists Moriartium’s experiments – which he claimed were the first steps in building “zombie beacons”. The humans, feeling betrayed by Moriaritum complied with his request and set out in the night to destroy the three locations of Moriartium’s experiments. The zombies tried to stop this to gain the proffessors favour, but the humans were able to complete the mission with a slither of time remaining. During the entire day Mystique’s controlled zombie had been feeding back information from the humans to the zombies, and in the night he finally reached the strength to possibly take out a human. This did not happen however as the humans were very disciplined in stunning each other. In the night his identity was revealed as Antony and he became a full zombie.

A lot has happened inside campus and human numbers are starting to dwindle. Can they survive the plague among them? Is Kaplan really helping them, or is he lying? And what is the Voodoo Queen doing now, as she has faded from the limelight. And who is The Postman? Only time will tell.

Day 1: Photos and OZs

Following the strange occurrences of the night before, humans flooded into the center of campus from all of their hiding places as the sun rose. At first it seemed as if perhaps their rabid friends, now affectionately known as Zombies, might be allergic to the light. But this proved not  to be the case and soon straggling humans were getting picked off and were joining the growing shamble.

Those humans who remained did so with significant paranoia. Every human was reguarly checked for strange behaviour and in this way coordinated groups of humans were able to ensure no one amongst their midst had taken the pills and drinks.

It was not long before the humans were contacted by the, now somewhat infamous, Professor Moriartium – creator of the pill which was causing such trouble. The professor it appears is doing research into the undead and asked the humans for photos which would aid in her science. In return for these photos she promised to help the humans discover who the original zombies were. The humans were quick to get on this job, but before long they found another one.

The travelling “celebrity” Madame Mystique sent out her own public message. She claimed that through a voodoo ritual she would be able to get the humans information on the original zombies which would speed up the scientist’s revelation. To conduct such a ritual she needed the humans to bring her a set of pills and drink, a scarf item from one of the first zombies and some special herbs which grow in neither night or light.

After a lot of searching and scheming the humans managed to arrive, albeit late, to see Madame Mystique and give her two of the items. They had been unable to find the herbs and this failure made the Voodoo Queen rather annoyed. Despite her annoyance she gave them an envelope with what information she could muster. Humans at the mission were also rewarded with some escapites given out at random. As a result of missing one of the items Moriartium would only be able to figure out who the original zombies were by 5:00pm. Of course that pended entirely on the humans getting the photo mission complete – which they seemed to be falling short of.

As the day continued the zombies were given a formidable advantage in the form of free voodoo charms and necklaces. Nonetheless they were having trouble getting past the well organised human squads. As 5:00pm got closer and closer the humans picked up their game and managed to both find escapium and finish the photo mission. Professor Moriartium managed to communicate that the humans should meet her near South Oval by 5:00pm. The humans split into various groups to and slowly made their way there. The first human group to arrive was there before 5:00pm, however the envelope did not arrive until after the deadline.

After waiting for the scientific machinery to warm up the original zombies were finally revealed to the humans and these individuals were quickly removed from the main group. At this point the sun was going down again and the humans split up to look for safe places to sleep for the night. Since the quarantine was announced no news of the outside world has filtered in. Humans who strayed towards the edge of campus noticed that the rough barricade formed initially had been replaced by a newly built high fence, which appeared to be patrolled and which spanned all of campus. No information about the mysterious postman has come up since then either….

Day 1: Ground Zero

In the early afternoon of the 25th of July, 2010 strange occurrences started happening on the ANU campus. Weird reports of violent attacks were starting to filter through, but it was impossible to tell if these were simply hoaxes or real ordeals. The victims of such attacks never reported the incidents to the police and no action was taken. However within a short amount of time the attacks had risen in frequency and the situation was promptly identified by not only the police, but also the military.

Videos started leaking onto youtube and other sources showing people drinking the new energy drink “Revive” in addition to a new pill developed by ANU’s own Professor Moriartium. The pills are not currently available on the world market and have been going through their final stages of testing on volunteers at the ANU. The untested combination of the pills and drinks seemed to trigger… something in the person who drank them, causing them to go into what seemed to be an uncontrollable rage. It also seems that the condition of the drinkers is imparted on their victims as those seen attacked have later been seen to be attacking other individuals.

In a quick response to the threat the Australian government took measures to quarantine the ANU campus, building a rough perimeter around the entire area and refusing all traffic in or out of the area. This blockade has largely be kept a secret from the public by a media blackout the government has enforced by taking control of all major news reporting stations in the country. In completely unrelated news the creators of “Revive” have donated a very large sum of money to the Australian government in support of their all around good job in the country.

Despite the media blackout and the speed at which these events have taken place some individuals outside of the zone have been attempting to spread the word through their own vigilante filming. So far however they are being followed by naught but internet conspiracy theorists.

Locked inside the zone are a large portion of ANU’s student population and a large number of nearby residents and even academics (including the notable Professor Moriartium herself). A notable inclusion in those trapped inside is the famous traveling “Madame Mystique”, a practitioner of “Voodoo” magic – hailing all the way from New Orleans. This mysterious lady has as of yet not been able to be contacted despite the effort of her agents. Future shows have yet to be cancelled.

During the night, groups of students descended on the campus searching for the pills and drinks which have caused the strange behaviour so far. Whether they want to use the pills themselves, or simply mean to prevent the outbreak from spreading further is unknown. There have also been indications that already money has lost value within the quarantine zone and that both barter and a strange new form of currency known as “escapium” is being used.

Is this entire event just an overblown response to a mildly harmless threat, or is this the start of something much more sinister?
