Day 1: The Beginning

The first kill of the infection

The first kill of the infection

An unknown plague has struck the Australian national university, it’s cause is currently unknown yet the effects have been devastating.

The first identified victim of the infection was Jack Collins, who showed that love really does hurt – in fact it kills.  Jack was showing some love and giving out a hug, little knowing that it was in fact an infected being he was hugging.  Sadly Jack is now lost to us – his humanity no longer remaining.
While the infection appears to be slow spreading, there are fears that it may exponentially increase in speed as more victims are infected.  Some have spoken of this plague as a curse, a damnation from some vengeful spirit and are calling for heavenly intervention.  Others believe there must be a scientific explanation.

The resistance has rapidly organised into squads and the leaders have met to discuss how to survive. Some civilians attempted to ignore the invasion – as can be seen by the bravery of a student at the Australian National University – she happily conversed in the centre of union court for a full quarter hour.

The travelling shop and cheeful shopkeeper

The travelling shop and cheeful shopkeeper

An unusual, dancing character made an appearance - one of those vultures who thrive in times of turmoil.  This odd shopkeeper was willing to exchange the rare substance “escapium” for radios, an apparent “vaccine” for the plague, a magically sock-like weapon, a curious grey box and a ham sandwich.

Paranoia in Panjenkas squad and Global Warming were both lucky enough to have found 2 each of the ‘escapium’ blocks.  This allowed them to team up to buy a radio, global warming contributing 2 blocks to paranoias one.

ChrisCarter&PiPescapium

Paranoia then used their second block to buy the curious grey box when the shop re-opened at approximately 1700h.

12 Hours to Go!

In 12 hours now the second game of HvZ will begin. Are you ready?

Our current list of players who have attended safety meetings and payed is 285 players. Last game had 250, so this is a ~15% improvement on last game. However we also suspect that this time around our player basis is far more committed, so the “actual” number of players will likely be considerably higher.

At midnight tonight the game will begin and the campus will become a play zone. OZs who have been randomly selected will be sent information via email about what to do next. All players should be checking the forums (particularly the Summer 2010 forum) for upcoming information on missions, story and special rules this game might have.

This game has 14 squads all of whom will be competing for the fabled title of the Best Squad Award. Last year the award went to the Bruce Hall Resistance with Paranoia in Pajenka’s as runners up – this year its anyones game.

So get excited, get paranoid and get prepared for HvZ Summer 2010!

It’s almost game time…

Hi all.

Please remember to register on the forums and attend a safety meeting.  You must attend a safety meeting to play the game.  The mods have done a really good job with the safety meetings and they truly aren’t boring.  Thanks to the mods hard work the safety meetings have been going very smoothly and have been interesting and informative with sign ups going fairly quickly and thoroughly afterwards.

It’s only 4 days until HvZ and I’m getting really excited.  I know the mods have a really awesome game planned and I can’t wait to get out there with my camera.  I hope you who are playing are as excited as I am!

O-week last week went really well, culminating in our day of nerf wars and our second safety meeting.  Special thanks to Sian for organising the Barbeque that went with the nerf wars, to Joe for organising the nerf wars, to Chris for taking over when we ran off to a mods meeting and to Richard for not only the use of his barbeque but for the use of his wonderful skills on said barbeque.  I really enjoyed the day and everything went very smoothly thanks to the above people.  Probably the biggest highlight of the day was when Chris Carter, Andrew Burgess and Richard Pywell managed to hold off the zombie hordes by themselves.  Very impressive guys!  Hopefully I’ll get some photos uploaded very very soon , I’ve just been having some wordpress difficulties, so please be patient with me.  I will have everything sorted out come game time.

O-Week

Firstly, welcome to any new members.  I’m sure you’re going to enjoy your HvZ experience.

We had a fantastic market day thanks to all those who came along and helped out, especially those who got dressed up or wore zombie makeup.  Our stall was in the copland area near the front, but that didn’t stop people from getting out there and plunging into the seething masses to hand out flyers, talk to people, grow our numbers and make new friends.  Our great humans vs zombies sign was in evidence, as was much PiP paraphernalia, and enormous nerf arsenals.  It was a great day so thankyou very much to all those who came along.

An honorable mention also goes to all those who have been busy handing out flyers, talking to people and generally promoting the game throughout o-week.  I know monday was a busy day for us, concluding with nerf training in the rain led by Chris Carter from PiP, but I know people have been continually busy promoting the game.

I’d also like to point out our article in last week’s chronicle – if you didn’t see a copy, you missed out.   Thanks to Eleanor for organising that.

Also, check out the times for all the safety meetings and make sure you go to one.

Keep up the good work everyone, and I hope you’re all as excited for the game as I am!

This is rachel, over and out.

Referendum Passed!

Today a referendum was held by the club to make minor changes to the constitution which would accommodate our new online membership and a few smaller items. The referendum was passed by a two thirds majority as stipulated in the constitution – meaning the changes are now valid. The constitution does still need to be approved by ANUSA however, but this might have to wait until they are less busy.

The new constitution has been moved to the constitution section of website where you can read it online or download a pdf version. We advise all club members to read and understand the constitution – but its up to you.

Game Rules Posted!

As of now the final version of game rules is now posted on the website. We also have an (almost final) version of the Allowed/Disallowed weapons list posted on the website. The moderators have made rulings on some controversial rule issues and although the solutions aren’t ideal we feel they are the best for the club as a whole and they will be final and are not to be disputed. You are free of course to talk to us about them or to raise objections to them in the suggestions forum for future games.

One important part I want to emphasise is a change that was made this afternoon. All Colleges and Halls at ANU will be off limits to the game and you will not be allowed to play inside them. This was not a result we wanted – however ANU security contacted us today and essentially our game must be exclusively outdoors and nothing else. In addition some colleges had already decided they would not allow the game. The result of this is that while we may look to try and get colleges more involved in the future – for this game at least colleges will be completely off bounds.

In any case, I hope you enjoy the rules and make sure you familiarise yourself with them. If you have any questions – make sure to ask us!

Referendum & Safety Meeting

Two announcements done at once!

The first is that we need to have a club referendum to amend the constitution. The main changes made have been so as to make our new online-registration valid constitutionally and to make membership free (whereas having each game cost $5). We also went through and cleaned up some of the more messy parts of the constitution.

The referendum will be held in the unilodge ground floor common room at 1:00pm on Saturday the 13th, if you have any trouble getting their or finding your way in then just call me on 0402531028. We need at least 10 full club members to attend. Please note that only full club members can vote and to vote you must be a paid member from last game. We will have copies of the old and revised constitution there for everyone to look at and talk about and the voting will be done through secret ballot.

Secondly I would like to remind everyone that tomorrow we have the first safety meeting for the game to be run, its being run early to get a lot of the more advanced players out of the way early – in some ways its a dress rehearsal for the mod team. Please remember you need to bring along $5 to join and you’ll need to bring along any modded weapons which need to be checked.

The safety meeting will run from 1:00pm – 3:00pm (possibly a little longer as its the first time) and will be in MCC T4.

Hope to see you there.

Weapons!

Thanks to Scott Reynolds we now have a shiny weapons guide which you can view on the weapons page. This should hopefully help you in deciding what sort of weapons you want to use in the game – or just to get an overall idea of the total market. If you want more information on a weapon, or if you want to hear alternative opinions – make sure to post on the forums!
