My Resignation

Postby Caleb Liaw » Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:01 pm

Hello all;
As you know, this is the last game for a number of people, so perhaps everyone can say their goodbyes in this one thread?

For some people, the ridiculous zombie wedding at the afterparty was the last straw.
For some people, it's just peer pressure and ridicule from everyone about the maturity of the HvZ game.
For some people, it might be the rules.

For me, I just graduate at the end of the year.
HvZ is a very exhausting game, both as a zombie (physically), and as a human (mentally).
Playing a game part-time (as I did in G2) is no fun, and I don't really feel like wasting five days of Annual Leave on a game that will make me far more tired than the working life itself.

So, this is goodbye HvZ for me.
You're all wonderful people, and I look forward to many more years of friendship with you all. But just not as a brother-in-arms.

I've had a good run - G1 as a very active zombie, and G3 as a very successful human - I only lost one soldier (Fiona) under my command in the many runs I've led. So, I feel like I've experienced all the game has to offer.
The constantly-constricting ruleset, which now extends to metallic paint and has apparently very-tight power restrictions, just kind of makes all my effort and money (well over $700 in guns, parts, tools, and ammo) feel completely wasted - and makes me a bit paranoid about trying to make any more weapons.
I might come back if/when the ANU stops being so ultra-conservative.

For those of you who are thinking "he's just whining about not getting Human Style," that is indeed part of the reason.
I've put over $200 into outfits exclusively for this game - and I get told "you're always stylish."
I've put about five hours into training Thriller - and it doesn't even get a mention.
I feel severely underappreciated for all my money and effort - and whether it is due to conflicting with the rules, or simply subjective moderators, I really don't feel like putting any more into this game.

Once again, thank you all for a wonderful final game to complement my final semester at ANU.
I'll still hang around on the forums to chat and hawk wares, of course, so I guess it's not really goodbye.

Hey man,

Good luck with things post-graduation, it was awesome meeting you; and for what it's worth, I thought your outfits and weapons were always awesome, and I videoed a LOT of your Thriller performance at Last Stand that will go into a "polished" cut of the HvZ Thriller video that I'll eventually upload.

If I could impart any wisdom from my own years post-graduation it would be this: that nobody's judgment of you is as important as your own constant evaluation of yourself. The "standards" the world may judge you by - your degree, your job title, the make of your car - are worth nothing compared to the pride you should take in yourself if you have run a good race or fought a true fight.

There may come opportunities to seize titles, fame or wealth; but if you do so by compromising your values, they mean nothing. Conversely, there are many who have seemingly simple lives, but who enjoy the comfort and quiet confidence that comes with knowing they have done their duty well. This distinction can be found everywhere: between a student who just wants the "piece of paper" that comes with graduating, and a student who truly learns; between an employee who just does their job, and another who goes above and beyond; between a friend who's there in the best times, and a friend who's there in the worst.

The poet Oriah Mountain Dreamer said it best, I think: "I want to know what sustains you from the inside / When all else falls away." If you live your life truly and (com)passionately, then awards and praise will surely come to you from time to time; but always recognise them for what they are. They are the mere trappings of life: not life itself.

Best of luck mate. Stay in touch!

Caleb, I'll miss you!

As for style the very fact that you can pull of those awesome outfits and not look a dick (Aka ME) is a freaking credit too you. Epic fashion win.

I hadn't met you before this game, but I'm so very glad I did play HvZ, if only to meet you.
You're an awesome dude, and watching you play made we want to be just as good as you.

I look forward to finally besting Terminator at the arcade with you my man. :)

Yours,
Alex

You were amazing in the field and did everything with style.
I envy you your wardrobe so much.

I may have died while running with you, but without you I would not have survived, or probably dared to try running down Uni Avenue and across the bridge there on a Thursday afternoon.

Hopefully, in a few years the club will have become enough of a tradition to relax some of the aesthetic rules without us being mistaken for a swat team, and your steampunk guns will put the fear of a ten-minute break into the hearts of zombies everywhere once more.
