How to Upload and Embed Photos - A Guide

Postby Myles » Wed May 19, 2010 5:46 pm

So it has come to my attention that a lot of people are having some difficulty with the different methods of uploading photos to this site. There are quite a few ways you can upload and embed photos and also a variety of reasons for doing so. A lot of the things in this guide will seem like common sense to many, but I have made it comprehensive so that everything is covered to the best of my ability. Please flick through it and read the parts which are important to you.

Embedding Photos

Before we get onto uploading photos, lets have a quick look at how to embed photos into your posts. Embedding photos is great if you want to make your posts more appealing and make them look less like a block of text. There are three main ways to embed photos on these forums:

1. The img tag
Spoiler: show
Code: Select all
[img]http://domain.com/yourpicture.jpg[/img]

The above is a short example of how to use the img tag, its really very simple. You find a picture online, get its URL (please note it has to be the url of the actual picture (ending in .jpg , . png , .gif , etc.) and not just the page its on), then paste the url between the two tags. If you want to be fancy you can also use the center/left/right tags to align the photo within your post.

Example:
Code: Select all
[img]http://hvz.club.anu.edu.au/images/latest-news.png[/img]

2. Albums
Spoiler: show
We have a great set of personal galleries set up here: gallery/index.php?mode=personal . We will talk about uploading to them below, but first lets talk about embedding photos from them. You are able to embed any of the photos uploaded on anyone's galleries to your posts, and its really easy to do!

  • First go find the picture you want from someone's gallery and click on it.
  • Next scroll down and look for the words "Image BBCode"
  • You'll see there are two options to copy, which look something like this:

Code: Select all
[album]1[/album]
[url=http://hvz.club.anu.edu.au/forum/gallery/image.php?album_id=1&image_id=1][img]http://hvz.club.anu.edu.au/forum/gallery/image.php?album_id=1&image_id=1&mode=thumbnail[/img][/url]

  • You can copy EITHER of these and paste them into a new post.

And thats it, the photo will be embedded. You can even take out the URL tags in the second option if you don't want to link it back to the original. Another option is to delete "&mode=thumbnail" from the end of the img URL, this will allow you to display the image in your post at full size.

Examples:
Code: Select all
[album]1[/album]

1

Code: Select all
[url=http://hvz.club.anu.edu.au/forum/gallery/image.php?album_id=1&image_id=1][img]http://hvz.club.anu.edu.au/forum/gallery/image.php?album_id=1&image_id=1[/img][/url]

3. Attachments
Spoiler: show
Another way to display photos in your post is to upload an attachment and choose the option "display inline", which will give you something like this:

Code: Select all
[attachment=1]uploadname.jpg[/attachment]

How to upload an attachment is explained directly below.

Example:
Code: Select all
[attachment=0]anu-small.png[/attachment]

Uploading Photos

There are tons of ways to upload photos to the internet, whether internally on our website, or externally on others. I hope to cover a variety of good ways to do this:

Small Numbers of Photos:

1. Forum Upload Attachment Button
Spoiler: show
One of the cool features of this website is that it allows you to upload attachments (ie. photos) into each post you make. Attachments are single files and will be displayed at the bottom of your post for people to download/open. If you upload a photo with this it will appear as a thumbnail which people can click to make larger. Here is how you do it:

  • Click New Topic/New Post as you normally would to post.
  • Scroll down below the text box and you'll see three tabs "options, upload attachment, poll creation"
  • Click on the "Upload attachment" tab
  • Choose the file using the button provided, then click "add the file"
  • Your file will now be attached and will be displayed when you submit your post
  • Extra: You will see that the attachment also gives you the option to display it inline, if you click this you can use the tags to have it inside your post wherever you want.

2. Imageshack
Spoiler: show
There are lots of websites on the internet which allow you to upload photos easily and for free. My personal favourite for quick, easy uploading (with no registration required) is imageshack.

http://imageshack.us/

  • Go to the website linked above
  • Press "Browse" and select the photos you want to upload
  • Click "Upload Now" below it (ignore the email option)
  • When the upload is complete, copy the URL in the "Direct Link" field
  • Paste this URL into img tags and you are done!

Example:

Code: Select all
[img]http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4484/badge150t.png[/img]

3. Facebook Uploading
Spoiler: show
For those who use facebook, you'll know that its a great way to share photos. An interesting feature they also offer however is the ability to share photos with people who aren't on your friends list using a direct link. If you want to do this:

  • Go to the page of the facebook picture (or even album!) that you want to share
  • Down the bottom of the page you will see the words "Share this photo with anyone by sending them this public link:"
  • Below this copy the link shown, this link can be posted anywhere and will allow ANYONE to see that album/photo

It should be noted however that with this method you cannot embed the photos directly in img tags. There is a workaround though:

  • Go to the page of the facebook picture you want to share
  • Right click the picture and select the option "open image in new window" (or new tab)
  • Copy the URL from the top of your web browser and place it inside img tags

Examples:

One of my albums:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1 ... 1bfb5dc4a6

A picture on its own:
Code: Select all
[img]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v169/234/38/746154487/n746154487_430627_9400.jpg[/img]

Large Numbers of Photos:

1.External Upload Sites
Spoiler: show
External upload websites are ones like imageshack above. The difference is that you generally have to sign up for them. This takes a little more work in the short term, but it pays off in the long run. I personally use Photobucket for all of my online uploads and it works fantastically. Another great choice is flickr.

http://photobucket.com/
http://www.flickr.com/

Just follow the instructions given on these websites as to how to upload photos. Once you are done they should give you a field with the direct image link. You paste this into img tags and you are done. Some of these sites even give you the link inside the img tag to make it even easier.

Example:

Code: Select all
[IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e244/Zorg_orc_warboss/zen-myles.png[/IMG]

2. User Galleries
Spoiler: show
As mentioned above, we have our own user gallery system. Each user on these forums is provided with their own gallery where they can post photos and then embed these into posts. This is a great place to put pictures from games so other people can look through them, but it also functions as a way to upload any photos you want.

You can browse people's user galleries at any time with the "user galleries" button at the top of the page. It links to here: gallery/index.php?mode=personal

You can create your own album (and subalbums!) through this page: ucp.php?i=gallery&mode=manage_albums

To upload pictures to a gallery follow these steps:

  • Go to ucp.php?i=gallery&mode=manage_albums
  • If you haven't already, create an album
  • Once your album is created, you will see a line which looks like: Personal album » Username [Edit | Delete | Go To | Upload Image]
  • Click on upload image
  • You have now come to large page which looks sort of like a "new post" page
  • Imagename looks confusing, but its really quite simple. Either check the box to let images keep their original names, or in the box above write something like "Image {NUM}", by doing this your images will be named "Image 1","Image 2", etc. The box with the number in it allows you to change the starting value of {NUM}, so if you set it to 11, the first image would be "Image 11".
  • Ignore the description field unless you really want to use it, its ok to leave this blank.
  • You now have the option to chose up to 10 photos (in each upload batch), by selecting them from the "choose file" options. You can choose to rotate them too if you want.
  • The photos need to be smaller than 1000px by 1000px and smaller than 5MB. You can resize them on your computer using a program like photoshop, or an online tool such as: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ .
  • Click submit and your photos should be uploaded!

You can do this again and again to upload all the photos you want. Also a quick tip, if you upload them while on the ANU network, they should go much faster.

I hope this guide has explained everything you need to know about uploading and posting photos on the forum. Photos make the website more colourful and lively, so do try and use them! We also really want people to upload their game photos to their personal user galleries etc. Part of our documentation for the game is in collecting lots of your photos, so remember to share them with us!
