Chapter one: A swan’s last song.

301

The night was cool and crisp. A pale, small moon hang overhead and, as frost kissed grass, it was quiet... too quiet... A distant scream, a fading light and one less soul walked the earth...

321

Once upon a time, their ship, a nameless one, sailed underneath stars upon seas of clouds. But that was no more. They had crashed close to this settlement and now they shivered. They called themselves the Aviators and their crew numbered ‘bout ten souls. Their captain, a loud, righteous, short woman ruled with a loving iron fist and she deemed it necessary to join forces with the others.

For something was very peculiar about this settlement, something that made them all feel uneasy.

Someone important had lost some precious pills and drafts of a certain ‘elixir ’. Both were meant to enhance your life, your experience perhaps of it. Combined, however, they turned you not to be human and hate those around you a little more. Change them into corrupt images of yourself is the will the combo forced upon you.

So they searched and searched. The Aviators nothing found, but the others did and all was going well... until the scream reached their ears. Their blood froze, their eyes grew wide as sound of bear tooth upon naked flesh then bone reached them. Hastily they left. The place cursed had been.

In the relative safety of their ship's cooling corpse they discussed tactics, they discussed how they will survive and from a night plagued by putrid dreams; awoke to a cold sun.

Chapter 2: Bad Air

331

There was a discernable stench in the air. It smelt and felt like that of rotting corpses, but it was far more rancid.

Many were vying for the survivor’s favours today. First was a perverted French shopkeeper who offered monetary rewards for any of the drafts and drugs and had also informed them of some ‘lost’ currency that he was willing to exchange for supplies.

Second was the eldritch witch, Madam Mystique. Apparently an arcane super star she said she wished to cull the spread of taint if identify she could those who begun it. She requested a sample of draft, pills, an indoor herb or two and a blue scarf that one of the tainted carried.

Third was the grouchy natured Professor Moriartium. A likely candidate for the person to start the spread, Moriartium requested field observations in the form of videos and pictures in exchange for a reward in the future (?)

All three requests the brave people sated. But the hunger of the growing horde they could not. More and more perished their passing extremely painful as demonstrated by the video below.

At the stroke of midnight Madam Mystique a curse upon the living cast. The air’s touch weapons rusted and a surge of desperation through the ranks flowed. Fifteen from the windows jumped hoping for a swift end, but the air was bad with taint. They rose and the leaders their charges stalked.

As for those who yet live. Some dressed in frivolous colours and the grounds begun to walk unarmed for insanity within them hatched.

Chapter 3: Riddle me this, Why does insanity work?

351

The hag, Madam Mystique, apparently disappointed with the services mere mortals can provide decided to turn her attention to the undead horde. She bolstered their regeneration, but seemed to regret her course of action for back to the humans she turned for aid. Her spellbook they recovered and three riddled items she sent for them to find. All of them they got, but the dead another twenty clawed to their side.

Humanity’s desperation summoned a hero from across the layers of time. Joined by a red-haired escort, touched ever so slightly by the hand of madness, the two walked the settlement armed with only courage and... socks...(undead apparently fear this more than anything). Despite the time traveller’s flesh being infused with the most delicious of aromas, they survived and their and others stories of survival boosted the moral of the remaining humans considerably.

Desperation also summoned armed Battle Maids... The survivors have no ideas where they came from, but their kind services and pleasant smiles aided in keeping sorrow’s knife at bay.

361

As day turned to night, Madam Mystique had one more task for the humans. Five places of power they need to find, were the earth’s and sky’s flow meet, and usher her servants safely to them. Into five groups they split to do her bidding. Four their destinations reached, the fifth got devoured.

Their deaths weren’t enough, however. Mystique a hero needed for her dark ritual needed and she got one. His sacrifice bought them the time to flee successfully and all thought him a goner to be.

But he still walks. Perhaps he is human. Perhaps he is undead...

Perhaps he is something more...

Time will tell.

((OOC: Also I have to include this coz it's so awesome:

Chapter 4: Pancakes are deadly

Day three bizarrely saw the scent of pancakes thick in the air today. It lured many a human and, for a strange reason, undead to its source. The effects were detrimental for the former, but beneficial for the later and the shambling hoard swelled to the size of a centurion.

871

891

Fear and optimism swept the human ranks in equal amounts. However the recklessness of some meant that many lives were needlessly lost and the hoard welcomed its newcomers with much excited munching.

Image

As for the hero the humans sacrificed, he returned much to their rejoicing. However, it was later proven that his intentions were those of deception.

An enemy of both the French keeper appeared today as well. Bad blood there was between them and the gun’s dealer, a vile, greedy man by the name of Kaplan Thornhill. He ordered the undead to bring him the petite man and they did, kicking in screaming, for him to be shot and croak in a puddle of his own blood.

901

Kaplan also has quarrels with Professor Moriartium and set his newly acquired hoard after her establishments to destroy her experiments. Despite the efforts of the rotting ones the labs went up in flame, the falling rain doing little to quench the spreading embers.

And so the humans struggle on... their strengths waning... their numbers dwindling and their existence constantly pushed to the brink.

911

However, against such a fearsome adversary their chances are numbered indeed.

921

Chapter 5: Professors Moriartium’s Taming:

Image

The day rose, the crows cawed as they feasted and the struggle for survival continued.

Image

The professor observations today needed to make, to decide if the rotting hoard worth her attention was. Surprised she was when not only competent in speech these ‘beings’ were, but also adept in the arts of poetry, singing, public speaking, acting, scientific observation and documentation and physical health. Thus she decided to not aid in the extermination of these wonderful, pleasantly rotting, intelligent creatures.

(There's more I just haven't had time to upload it)

With the loss of the professor’s help, things got even bleaker for the humans and their failings in communication, their fear and rivalry did not aid one bit their situation. Four areas they had to patrol every hour or so and only two they managed to secure, their numbers ever dwindling.

A glimmer of hope remained; however, the Dr. Still lived, bringing some futuristic firearm technology to the fight. He still preferred studying the world though and spent many hours reviewing French history trying to comprehend the death of the late French shopkeeper...

Image

By dusk the dead outnumbered the living, their moans of exhilarated happiness filling the air and the humans cowering in their last refuges.

Image

Image

They had to get out and the light’s they had gathered was their last hope for an ammo drop box it would bring from their now distant government.

They gathered on a flat green field, the smell of flesh attracting the dead in their dozens. They tried to place their beacons. They failed. They fled and the undead feasted.

Many fell, including one of the valiant battle maids. So many died that night that for once the dead sated were and their hunt ceased for the night.

Now two more dawns remains and the candle of hope humans’ hold close to their heart is perilously low.

Image

Chapter 6: It’s all fun and games until they start eating your brains...:

Image

Image

The shambling corpses were so pleased with the living today that together they decided to play games. Thus the dead mingled with their old team mates and played against other teams like the peaceful days of yonder.

All this exercise, however, made the dead hungry and an ante they placed. Money they’d give to whoever human their brains placed on the gauntlet and eight did. To the disappointment of the rotters only on two they managed to feast upon, the rest got away and one of the leaders dodging their claws by a hair’s width.

Things got less amicable after this and as the day drew to an end the dead amassed to siege the living. Like eels the human’s escaped, but two commanders were snared in the rotting nets. Holed up the last few humans mourned their loss.

One sunrise remains now. Wether it’ll be red remains to be seen, but the dead have the numbers and nothing to lose. They've already started preparing. Ceremonially painting themselves.

Chapter 7: Death is not the beginning of the end. It’s the beginning:

As rain gave way to sun on the final day, a rainbow arched its way across the sky; its luck deadly.

In a last ditch effort to save the survivors before nukes were dropped on the settlement, the government decided to send in trucks to pick them up; provided they made it out of the city.

Image

Of the three movers and shakers within the settlement only the Voodoo Queen approved of the humans and was willing to confer her boons towards their salvation. The other two were either indifferent or had more malicious intentions. For some unfathomable reason, the humans chose to ask Kaplan Thornhill for aid, the one to whom they appeared most incompetent. The zombies in the meantime accepted Professor Moriartium ’s blessing gaining improved regeneration powers in the process.

Image

As the living prepared for their final exodus, the hoard assembled outside their last refuge, the French shopkeeper, risen now, walking with them.

The barriers the dead could not hold back, like an amorphous mass they engulfed the living. All fell. The alien superhero, the man made of iron, even the Dr. Who traversed time. All died and into undead abomination transformed.

As the sirens rang, Moriartium sowed her last work onto a field for the birds to devour. As wings they spread to flee, the taint with them they carried. Their song forever transformed into a deadly dirge for those still living.

Image

Of the settlement no trace was left.

As of humanity, no sign was left either.

THE END.

The above work of bad 'fiction' wouldn't have been possible without the massive amounts of effort and time a certain few individuals placed over the last few months:

Image

(and here's one of Myles since I managed to cut him out of the above picture, in dictator pose :P. Oh and thank you for bringing the game to Oz Myles!)

Image

So to them I say a big

Thank You!

However, even with their efforts the game would still not be possible without the participation of the rest of you.

After all, the game is fun because of the people, not because of the rules.

Image

So to you too I must say a big

Thank You!

And thank you also for telling me your stories and letting me photograph you!

It's been great meeting and playing with you all! You're all fantastic individuals and it is cool to hang out with you guys...

Most of the time...

Image

Until we meet again on the battlefield (or in real life)

Dimitris (or Demetrios, or Dim, or Dem, or Dimi, or Deme, or Dom or whatever you call me these days)

Edit: I am unforgivable. I forgot to thank the executives... So a big thank you to Chris, Joe, Anthony, Myles and Rachel too. Well a second thank you to Myles and Rachel...XD

Edit: Thank you all for honouring me with the bard award! :D
