DAY ONE: MONDAY
CHALKY WITH A CHANCE OF WEED

Image Image Image

In light of the recent tragedies surrounding the popular Revive energy drink and the medications colloquially known as “suicide pills,” a cluster of students trapped at the quarantine site gathered to protest in the way students do: with obnoxious chalk drawings. After consulting the unofficial team mascot, Sergei, the team set to work, emblazoning Union Court with a warning – or was it? An entire bucket of jumbo chalk later, the squad, known as Global Warming, divided into two small mobile teams and awaited the midnight press release.

When it hit the headlines that the devastating Revive and suicide pills had been left haphazardly throughout campus, endangering the lives of all trapped in the quarantine zone, the two teams departed rapidly. Despite searching both Copland and Menzies (locations which had been leaked through the media), the squad came up empty handed and sought refuge until daybreak, when it was anticipated that some answers for this strange scenario might be attained.

Image Image Image Image

Assembling at the pre-arranged meeting point, members of Global Warming scoured the campus, ensuring safe passage for squad members and keeping eyes peeled for photogenic zombies. Despite acquiring a few paparazzi shots along the way, attention was soon diverted to the riddle of Madame Mystique in regards to an essential herb for a ritual. The squad racked their brains and prowled the area in search of anything that might be neither night nor light, but came up empty handed. A close call with a simultaneous stun/tag left the team shaken, but not deterred. Mounting a final quest to find the elusive Baldessin “Sun and Moon Wing” proved unsuccessful, and as one o’clock came and went with no definitive location for the ritual site nor word of the acquisition of the herb, the squad prepared to upload the acquired zombie photos.

However, an urgent call from Angus and Pat, who had journeyed to the ritual site (arriving before anyone else – including the illustrious Madame herself), led the squad on a mad dash to the edge of campus. Although technically arriving fifteen seconds late, Freya, Luke, Andrew Dibb and Austin were rewarded for their efforts, earning the squad a single escapite. The remainder of the squad caught up too late, but armed with some currency, they returned to HQ to await the shop opening. Information was purchased with the escapite, which revealed a more specific hint as to the location of the herb. Although it had not been found in time for the ritual (resulting in the postponement of OZ reveals until the paparazzi snagged enough pictures), it still carried the value of one bar of escapium. Armed with the clue of “…under the black sun,” and with sites of hidden escapium revealed, the squad split to search.

Image Image Image

Although at least four of the escapium sites were located, the riches had already been pillaged. However, things took a turn for the better when Freya spied a round black sculpture near Coombs (a short distance from one of the escapium sites). Excitement built, and rocketed when the herb was spied, untouched, at the base of Black sun II. Item in hand, the team headed for safety, and after settling in Coombs, spied Tim, Ginny, Mingji, Hagen and Michelle who had also deduced the location of the Black Sun, and were heading there themselves. Convening to plan the rest of the day, it was decided that Luke would retain the herb for safe-keeping, Ginny and Tim would hole up for upcoming classes and the rest of the contingent would escort Michelle, Andrew Donnellan and Luke to safety.

Image Image

En route to these refuges, intel informed us that humans were to meet at Professor Moriatium’s lab on South Oval, as the photography mission had been sufficiently completed, permitting the renowned scientist to unmask the traitors in human midst. After ushering Luke into Forestry for safe-keeping of the herb, Anna, Hagen, Freya and Austin circumvented the oval to head for the lab. Although cautious of the active zombies guarding the lab, a lapse of focus almost lead to the deaths of Hagen and Austin at the hands of Original Zombie Chris Carter. Hagen saved himself with a reflexive hurl of a sock, but contention on the tag of Austin and its timing with Hagen’s sock, and disagreement between witnesses led to a scissors-paper-rock determination. Thankfully, luck ruled in our favour, and the Global Warming representatives lived on, making it safely back to Luke after the OZ unmasking, and subsequently finding safe shelter for the night.

Not all was warm and sunny, for terrible news soon reached their ears. Tim, Ginny, Liam and Mingji all found their way to that dreaded Revive/Pills combination, and whether through accident, despair or peculiar intention fell dead simultaneously at the stroke of midnight. On top of the deaths of Andrew Dawson and Pat earlier in the day, this was a disturbing prospect.

However, the remaining squad leaders had a feeling that Tuesday’s forecast would be mostly fine.

How wrong they were….

DAY TWO: TUESDAY
SUCCESS, FOLLOWED BY LATE DECIMATION

After locating the herb the prior afternoon, it was vital that squad representatives get it safely to the shop, where it could be exchanged for currency – and thus, information. This, in conjunction with other squads’ gains, provided Global Warming with ample clues about upcoming item locations. Meanwhile, the recently turned members were slowly adjusting to their life in death, and enjoying their five-minute stun timers granted by the failure of Madame’s ritual the previous day: Tim intercepted Austin and Angus in the early morning, whilst Liam ensured the security of Madame, who was travelling across campus with her ritual book in hand.

The still living squad, however, was determined to get their hands on the items that would be coming into play shortly. It was unknown just how important these might be – would they be a cure for the Revive-induced rage? Or an escape from the quarantined campus? Whatever they turned out to be, it was important to get a hold of them. Information pointed to the Guardian figures sculpture at Coombs, and Angus, Andy and Freya – with compatriots Ben Creelman (of Blackcoats), Geoff Stacey (of Paranoia in Pajenka’s) and Steven Ellis – waited at the site for these mysterious items to be planted.

Image Image

However, when word arrived of the location of Madame’s ritual book, it became apparent that those waiting at Coombs for the distribution of essential items should leave in search of a greater bounty. Thankfully, Anna, Austin and Laura were able to converge on the Guardians statue shortly after the team departed. Lo and behold, the trio had barely scoured the area when Austin spied a ring of keys below the Guardians. Retreating to safety in Baldessin, they waited to reconvene with the team who had successfully located Madame’s book.

Two items – the keys found even before the riddle had been released – in the squad’s hands left their spirits high, and as Anna and Andy escorted Austin to the biology labs, the remainder sought refuge in a more secure location: the labyrinthine Coombs. Little did they know how much trouble this hiding place could be.

When Andy and Anna returned, they discovered the crew nestled in one of the open air courtyards – but alas, they were accompanied by a zombie! When an attempt to gain the team’s attention from the balcony above, Anna and Andy began to seek a stairwell to lead them to the courtyard, only to find themselves in yet another courtyard – and face to face with the zombie. Although Anna disabled him, the creature began to tail them through the maze of Coombs. Despite warnings from Angus to avoid leading the zombie back to the main group – still in possession of two items, though ensuring knowledge of who actually carried them was ambiguous – and trying to lose him, the duo accidentally stumbled into the same courtyard as Global Warming Plus.

The team quickly took refuge in the more secure building, fearing what might happen if the zombie’s threats to call in back-up were met. By a stroke of luck, no reinforcements arrived, and the dejected zombie abandoned the team, leaving them to survive on salvaged vending machine food until Madame’s ritual that night. In the meantime, the team ensured safe passage for humans and attempted to participate in a daring mission to capture the zombie’s flag, but arrived too late. Nevertheless, the skies began to darken and Angus and Andy, now teaming up with Chris and Hugh, journeyed to the Boat Shed rendezvous with items in hand, while the remaining members of the squad either sought shelter for the night or coordinated to join the humans who were making their way, by way of tortoise-paced nerfball to the rendezvous. Zombies swarmed, and fear began to settle in the heroes’ hearts as they realised just how fast the horde was growing.

Image Image

Ultimately, Madame and the item-bearers joined the human resistance at the foot of south oval, revealing that it was necessary for the humans to divide into five small groups and reach five important locations in order for her to divine some useful information in the hopes of returning zombie stun times to ten minutes. Global Warming, now reunited, teamed up with the Bruce Hall Resistance, and were assigned to take the top corner of University Avenue. As they crossed the South Oval stepping stones, it became apparent that a disproportionate number of zombies were following them. However, their courage persisted unbroken until the first charge. The twenty-strong human division stunned the majority of the attackers, but when the stragglers picked off Laura and Anna, apprehension took hold. Rounding the corner of Forestry, two more humans – including Andy – fell prey to a sly ambush from shrubbery.

University Avenue came into sight, but so did more zombies. It was beginning to sink in that this could very well be the end, and after another charge depleted the team’s numbers further – and reduced the ammo reserves significantly – it became more than a vague possibility. It was fast becoming fact. Moments after reaching the required location for Madame’s divination, the zombies conducted a final, deadly third charge. With ammunition next to nil, the horde stole several more lives, taking Chris, Hugh and Angus with them. With his dying breath, Angus commanded the still living to run. Four BHR led the way to Daley Road, Luke and Austin close on their tail. Freya, having only just scraped through a near-death experience was a few paces behind, but managed to take out two ambushing zombies while on the run. The survivors climbed the stairs to safety and turned to survey the devastation.

Meanwhile, another sacrifice was taking place. The other humans – virtually untouched due to the horde’s focused destruction of the GW/BHR team – had assembled for Madame’s ritual, and as the newly turned Andy, Angus and Anna joined their new brethren, Madame demanded a human sacrifice in return for safe passage of the resistance and the reinstatement of a ten-minute stun timer for the horde. As Anthony Bal was deserted to be undone by Madame’s nefarious plot, the Global Cooling zombies observed with a detached stare. Their still quasi-human qualities could still recall the horror of the massacre...

In a single night, BHR had been reduced to four, and the damage to Global Warming had been just as ghastly. In addition to the unfortunate loss of Daniel Pogson earlier in the day, six more GW’s had fallen, including the majority of the squad’s remaining leadership structure. Only seven were left, and after such a narrow escape, the terror would undoubtedly linger. The survivors of the massacre sought refuge, and prayed that their sacrifices would not be meaningless.

DAY THREE: WEDNESDAY
QUIET WITH PERVADING CAUTION

It was a day for licking wounds.

That isn’t to say that Global Warming disintegrated, but merely that it was decided that a strategic amount of caution needed to be exercised. With the squad reduced to less than half its initial size, survival was the key. At this stage, missions were a risk that could not afford to be taken. With most of the squad spending the daylight hours in study mode, seeking to find answers to the growing peril in the annals of academia, the day was largely uneventful. Escorts to different areas for research were continuous throughout the day, though Hagen’s reputation as a master of solo stealth grew considerably.

Despite the intention to lay low, and keep the horde’s attention away from the “ones who got away,” Freya ensured she fulfilled her duty to the human cause. Kaplan Thornhill, a European arms-dealer had mysteriously made his way into the quarantine zone, and had demanded a human escort in order to meet the French shopkeeper with whom he had a long-loved rivalry. Freya joined the human operation, but when the group was beset by the undead and the humans ruled in favour of survival, she took refuge in the medical centre. Perhaps this was fortunate, as vivid recollections of the night before – the recurring zombie charges, the very location of the destination – were growing with every step.

Image

As the evening wore on, news arrived of Thornhill’s offer to aid the human cause by disrupting Professor Moriartium’s zombie-favoured experiments by the detonation of three carefully placed EMPs. With Steven, Andrew, Hagen and Michelle safely hidden away for the night, Luke, Freya and Austin decided that despite their losses, they could no longer abandon the human cause.

Departing the fleeting safety of Copland Court, they moved with the group headed for the Law site, whilst the other half of the resistance focused their sights on Union Court, and subsequently Psychology. Paranoia filled the air despite the lack of any zombie sightings, for word had spread that another traitor was in the human midst; another zombie in human’s clothing. In the end, no threat was posed due to rigorous sock-passing and after the debris of Union Court was spotted in the night air, the fuse for Law was set, and the team picked up the pace to head for Psych.

As the team neared the building, the third bomb was detonated – and with only a minute to spare. Nevertheless, this was no time for rejoicing: Psychology crawled with the undead. Even the squad former family stalked in the night: Tim, Ginny, Anna, Angus... all ghoulish in the glow of street lights. The humans moved quickly, aiming once again for the unique safety offered by Daley Road, and despite a few close calls, the resistance made it through alive, having successfully completed Kaplan’s mission.

Yet this did not even register as a cause of excitement for Global Warming. After the disastrous massacre, the very fact that their caution had paid off with a zero percent casuality rate was the only reason they needed to celebrate.

It seemed a glimmer of hope had been found once more, and perhaps tomorrow would see the return of Global Warming in all its glory.

DAY FOUR: THURSDAY
PREVAILING TERRITORIES FROM THE WEST

In light of a successful day of survival, the squad was determined to get back in the game for the human cause. A perfect opportunity presented itself right as Luke, Steven, Michelle, Freya and Austin assembled for their morning meeting in the newly adopted HA complex headquarters. Four territories had been established within the quarantine zone, and in reward for claiming and holding a territory, a squad could be rewarded with monetary compensation – and keep such currency from zombie hands. Even with so few members, Global Warming was convinced that they would be able to claim the Menzies Territory.

After ensuring Luke, Freya and Steven had reached their respective academic centres, and sneaking Hagen out of a relatively unpatrolled Manning Clarke, Michelle, Austin and Hagen made a beeline for the Menzies territory. Time was running short, and confusion over the exact location of the site became a greater fear than zombies themselves – who had not been seen at all. However, the territory was eventually located in the grove, and with only a couple minutes to spare, Global Warming left their mark. After an hour of keeping watch from within the safety of the library, a second seal was left at the site, putting Global Warming one mark ahead of PiP, who had left the very first mark, but had not been seen since. A single zombie was sighted, and momentary fear set in after his warning of “incoming company” led the trio to mistake a group of tourists (evidently taking some ghoulish glee in this apocalyptic tragedy) for a horde lurking in the distance.

With Hagen requiring a return escort to the HA complex, and Freya unbound from her intellectual duties, the trio returned to HA with the ultimate intention to make a 180 degree turn and head back to Menzies to leave a third mark – which might solidify the squad’s chances of claiming the Menzies territory overall. Hesitation resulted in deliberation as word arrived that the zombie horde were camping the Psychology territory, but with not enough hands to be of any service, Freya, Austin and Michelle – accompanied by Alistair Newman (of The Cavalry) and Anthony “Antos” O’Sullivan (of PiP: Orange) – returned to Menzies, leaving a third and final mark. Two zombies – Larry Schoenberg (formerly of PiP) and the long-lost leader Tim – but both were stunned with no hassle. It was good fortune, however, that the team had not taken the stairs to the grove, for Larry had been literally lying in wait, ready to claw at the humans’ ankles.

With a third mark made, it was necessary to escort Austin to CSIT, and though the team moved efficiently and even acquired an extra compatriot in Phillip Nash, they could not shake Larry who insisted on trailing them all the way through Coombs, the HA complex and even towards the Beer Garden stepping stones. Thankfully, only a couple other zombies were encountered and the team arrived safely at their destination, reloaded and prepared to move out once again.

Image Image Image

From here, the squad each went their own ways. With the Menzies territory secured, attention once again returned to research, but sadly this left each squad member isolated in vastly different corners of campus. When news filtered through that the Psychology site had still not been claimed, Hagen took it upon himself to claim it for the good of humanity before it was too late. Less than five minutes until the opportunity would be gone forever, he soloed his way from Pajenka’s to Psychology, but despite this valiant effort, there was nothing that could be done. The horde had waited too long to allow a single human to stop them now, and Hagen was beseiged in Physics as the timer hit zero and the Psychology territory was lost once and for all.

Isolation was proving difficult, and though Andrew, Michelle and Hagen ultimately managed to escape to safety, Austin (in CSIT), Freya (in EMS) and Steven and Luke (in MCC) were determined to reunite in order to aid the human effort at the night’s mission to aid a shipment for Professor Moriartium. Austin managed to make it to Pajenka’s to join the resistance, but Luke and Steven were less fortunate. Requiring more ammunition, the duo had attempted the short distance to Steven’s stockpile, when a zombie spied them taking the Crispin Elevator and organised an ambush, they didn’t stand a chance. Although Steven escaped, Luke was not so lucky...

With only three – still isolated - members still able to help the human effort, and the resistance beginning to make their journey to Fellows Oval for the shipment of Moriartium’s equipment, the team ruled in favour of survival. Both Freya and Steven managed to make it to a safe haven, whilst Austin found himself on the edge of the nerfball, creeping slowly to solve a landing signal reminiscent of Mastermind. The miniscule human turnout and the zombie ferocity left the humans no choice but to forfeit the mission lest they suffer complete annihilation. The decision may have saved Austin’s life, for he ultimately made it to safety.

And thus, Global Warming lived to fight another day – and with the Territory reward in their back pocket, perhaps they might have recovered from the devastating losses earlier in the week.
